If you are trying to incorporate protein shakes into your diet, then it may seem a bit of a chore trying to drink a protein shake for breakfast, before a workout, or just for the start of your day. That’s why adding your protein shake to a smoothie is a great idea.

This way, you can have a healthy breakfast and fill yourself up before your day starts!

As I mentioned above, there are so many chocolate protein smoothies to choose from! After searching the web and getting some ideas, and being a really fussy eater myself, I finally settled on a quick, easy and tasty protein smoothie recipe that we all enjoy.

Our fitness journeys have been on and off over the years, but this is our go to high-protein smoothie when we are trying to stick to our goals.

Chocolate protein smoothie ingredients & alternatives

There is no specific brand of ingredient that you have to use. It can depend on what is kicking around in the cupboards at home and if you have a favourite.

Protein powder

We are no nutrition experts and again, there are so many protein shakes out there to choose from. So it’s always best to do your research or ask a professional for advice.

We currently both use PhD Diet Plant protein powder (High Protein Lean Matrix). We use the Belgian Chocolate flavour (purely because it’s the flavour we can both agree on and goes well in the smoothies and protein snacks that we make).

I like this one as it doesn’t have too many calories, and has a good amount of protein (18g protein per 25g serving), plus other core minerals/vitamins. The other benefit is that it is a vegan protein shake if that’s what you are looking for.

Milk

We have put milk in the recipe but it is down to preference of what you use. You can use semi-skimmed milk, and I usually opt for Almond milk.

Nutmeg

This is optional but it does give it that little extra flavour. We prefer the whole nutmeg and grate it, but ground is perfectly fine too. You could also experiment with other flavours, we do have a bit of a thing for Tumeric so why not give it a go?

Seeds

Again, the seeds you can use are down to choice. We love the Linwoods Flaxseed, Pumpkin & Sunflower Seeds mix, which are organic and cold-milled. We also use Linwoods organic ground flaxseed.

We can get these from our local health food shops, and supermarkets, or usually, we just buy them from Amazon.

If we have run out, like we did when writing this recipe, then you can chuck in chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, or anything you like

Equipment needed

There’s not a lot that you need to make this delicious chocolatey protein smoothie. Just a blender or mixer and a spoon, and either a glass or protein shaker to drink the final product from.

We just use our old Breville personal blender as you can chuck all the ingredients into the container and then blend it and drink it straight from the bottle.

Here is the recipe for our super easy healthy chocolate protein smoothie. Feel free to adapt or add ingredients and we hope you enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 45g Oats
  • 375ml Milk

  • 1 tbsp Seeds (flax, chia or sunflower)
  • 1/2 tsp Nutmeg

How to make:

You can pretty much add everything into your mixer and blend, but as we use a smaller portable blender we do it in this order:

1. Grab a blender or mixer and add the oats, milk and banana (chopped in half).

2. Then add in your peanut butter (we use a heaped half spoon).
